Losing the Conservative Moment

Traditional conservative publications like National ReviewThe Weekly Standard and Commentary have long been critical of Donald Trump, arguing that his ascent could potentially harm the conservative movement. During the campaign, they delivered columns arguing that Trump, "would trash the broad conservative ideological consensus within the GOP in favor of a free-floating populism with strong-man overtones." Since Trump's election, they've grappled with the question of how, if at all, his presidency can move their agenda forward. Brooke speaks with Commentary Associate Editor Noah Rothman, who recently lamented, “the window in which real legislative achievements could be secured is closing rapidly.”
