The band called Mae.Sun is led by Hailey Niswanger, who plays flute and sax, and occasionally sings. She draws a lot of inspiration from the so-called spiritual jazz that grew up in the wake of John Coltrane in the late 60s and early 70s, and her specific spiritual guide is the popular Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk and poet Thích Nhât Hanh. Her latest album as Mae.Sun is called Into the Flow - referring to the idea of the flow state, a place of deep calm and oneness with the world. The music offers both a quiet space for reflection and a tinge of psychedelia. Mae. Sun plays Monday night, Nov. 29 at C’mon Everybody, in Brooklyn.
