Singer-songwriter Stephin Merritt has led a number of bands, but he's best known for The Magnetic Fields. Merritt possesses one of indie rock's most doleful voices - but don't let that gloomy baritone fool you: Merritt's songs also feature a wicked sense of humor. His sharply observed songs and his elegant arrangements are often compared to Cole Porter - a comparison that Stephin Merritt can't stand, but can't stop. His most recent album with The Magnetic Fields is 50 Song Memoir which follows Merritt's 50 years of life in an autobiographical song cycle - each song corresponding to one year. They will perform all 50 songs over two nights at The Apollo Theater this Friday and Saturday, staged with artifacts from the last five decades.
