In Major Shift, ICE Detains Few Immigrants in New Jersey Jails. What Happened?

A major shift is currently underway when it comes to immigration detention in the New York region. For years, local immigrants in deportation proceedings were held at four jails in New Jersey. During the Trump Administration, these facilities jailed as many as 1,500 immigrants. Now, there are just 170 ICE detainees locked up in the Garden State.

WNYC’s Matt Katz has reported on immigration detention in our area for five years. He joined Morning Edition host Michael Hill to discuss the closure of ICE detention centers in New Jersey, and what will happen now with detainees from New York and New Jersey.
