Manhattan to Get New Area Code

WNYC News | Dec 2, 2015

Manhattan will get a new area code to meet the increasing demand for phone numbers.

The New York State Public Service Commission announced Tuesday that the area code 332 will serve both residential and business clients.

Telephone companies are asked to file an implementation plan by mid-January. The code will be assigned to new customers starting in the second quarter of 2017.

Commission Chair Audrey Zibelman says the additional area code indicates a thriving telecommunications market and growing New York City population.

The North American Numbering Plan Administrator that oversees the telephone numbering system projected that Manhattan would run out of available codes in late 2017.
