Top national security officials and Silicon Valley executives are engaged in a conversation about how to confront terrorism where it often begins -- online. One idea: to create an algorithm of sorts that could detect and measure radicalization. The trouble is, radicalization is a complex process, notoriously difficult to distill into consistent patterns and predictive factors. Bob talks with terrorist behavior expert John Horgan about the gaps in our understanding of radicalization, and the crucial differences between those who just consume extremist content online, and those who go on to violent action.
