Two Police Officials in New Jersey Placed on Administrative Leave After Officers "Herd" Black Teens

WNYC News | Aug 4, 2017

The police chief and a police captain in Maplewood, NJ, have been placed on administrative leave, following the release of a videotape allegedly showing black teens "herded like cattle" to the town border by officers after a Fourth of July celebration.

Committeeman Frank McGehee made those comments at a public meeting Tuesday night, when the township board voted to place Chief Robert Cimino on paid leave for 60 days. Police Captain Joshua Cummis has been placed on leave through the end of the month. The investigation is continuing.

Jessica Mazzola is covering the story for NJ Advance Media. She said residents have been growing more concerned about what happened that night.

"Their concerns initially had been about moving the teens over the Irvington border, and about the use of pepper spray," she explained. "Since the video was released, they added to those concerns use of excessive force."

Mazzola said the video appears to show officers kicking and punching teens.

The town has hired a consulting firm to further investigate. A report on its findings is expected in September.
