The late composer George Crumb loved to create nocturnal, often eerie music with the piano, and he wrote some of his major piano works for Brooklyn’s own Margaret Leng Tan. Including two books of nocturnes that he called Metamorphoses, in which each piece was based on a famous painting. Margaret Leng Tan is required to play not only the piano keys but to strum or scrape the strings inside the instrument. In 2018, Leng Tan performed the first book of Crumb’s Metamorphoses in a New Sounds Live concert. Margaret Leng Tan plays the second book of Crumb’s Metamorphoses, along with music for bowed piano and more, on Dec. 3, live at National Sawdust.
