Thirty years ago, Maria Schneider had a wonderful idea. A crazy, totally impractical, but wonderful idea – she would revive the big jazz orchestra, write music specifically for this group of some of New York’s leading musicians, and fund their recording and touring without going through the usual record industry channels. How’d that work out? Well she pioneered crowdfunding, won seven Grammys, collaborated with David Bowie, and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in music. Now the Maria Schneider Orchestra celebrates its 30th anniversary with a concert (and a new retrospective album called, Decades) at Town Hall on Nov. 23.
