Meet The Mets' First Female Stadium Announcer

WNYC News | May 31, 2018

The New York Mets have a new P-A announcer - and for the first time in New York baseball history, a woman asking fans to stand for the National Anthem and reading off the day's lineup.

Marisol Castro will start her new job reading the rosters during the Mets' series against the Chicago Cubs this week. She says her decades-long career as a TV news anchor prepared her to step behind the microphone, but not necessarily for the length of a baseball game.

"That was actually something that my mother said to me, she's like when are you going to go to the restroom? I was like, 'ay Mami, that's the last thing I'm thinking of,'" Castro said.

Castro says growing up in the Bronx, she dreamed of playing shortstop. But she wasn't necessarily a Mets fan.

"I have been a Yankees fan since I was a zygote," Castro admitted. "That being said, I never root against the Mets. Except maybe during a Subway Series. But now I know better!"

Regardless of her past loyalties, Castro is the first woman to land this gig for either the Mets or the Yankees, and is only the second female announcer to call a game on a stadium mic in all of Major League Baseball. That's something she's keenly aware of.

"The fact that the Mets made it their business to actively seek not only just a female, but a Latina, speaks volumes of who they are as an organization and the direction that they're moving in," Castro said.

Since the Mets broke the news this week, Castro has been flooded with messages from people saying their daughters are listening out for her—and also asking what she can do about the team's seemingly ever-growing disabled list.

"You know, I was already looking at the Mets lineup and seeing who's on the DL and fielding questions about 'hey listen, I know you're going to be the PA announcer, but can you pitch also?' Which, believe me, if I could, I would," said Castro.

That kind of dedication is exactly what Mets fans want to see out of anyone wearing the orange and blue.
