Michael McDonald has an instantly recognizable voice. He was a hitmaker with the Doobie Brothers in the 70s and then an even bigger star as a soloist in the 80s and early 90s, playing mostly middle-of-the-road pop with gentle hints of funk and jazz. But in the last couple of years, something strange has happened. Michael McDonald has become… cool.  Indie rockers like Grizzly Bear and Johnnyswim have recorded with him; alt jazz bass hero Thundercat is a big fan too. To his eternal credit, McDonald was among the first to publicly wonder how this had happened. But he’s been happy to play along…
