More Black Migrants are coming to New York City

WNYC News | Apr 18, 2024

A growing number of migrants from African nations are coming to New York City to seek asylum, signaling a shift from the Central and South American migrants that made up the majority of cases in city immigration records.

In April, a thousand migrants mainly from African countries gathered in City Hall Park during a Council hearing on racial inequities in the city’s immigrant support systems.

Amaha Kassa, the executive director of African Communities Together, and WNYC’s race and justice reporter Arya Sundaram, who has been covering Black migrant communities, talked with WNYC's Sean Carlson more about this.
