For More Women in Jazz, Host Blind Auditions

The Brian Lehrer Show | Apr 29, 2015

Despite the numerous contributions of women to jazz music over the years, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra has never had a permanent female band member. Trumpeter and advocate for Jazz Women and Girls Ellen Seeling wants to change that. She explains how her advocacy group would like to work with JALC to adopt a policy of public posting of job openings and blind auditions before a committee for all new hires at the Orchestra. When American Orchestras adopted this policy, the percentage of women members grew from 5% from 1975 to over 45% percent today.

The Jazz Women and Girls Advocates will be rallying today, April 29 at 6 p.m. at Lincoln Center.
