#3335: Motion and Stasis

This New Sounds explores music that plays with ideas of texture, drone and space.  Hear Norwegian composer/drummer Erland Dahlen conjure dark experimental soundscapes mostly based around his Slingerland Rolling Bomber drum kit from World War II. Dahlen plays with an arsenal of electronics, small percussion, and even a saw, overlaying them into haunting and hypnotic atmospheres, enhanced by the drum tones of the rosewood drum kit.

Then, there’s also music made of metal, and played by cello bows by a group from Germany with the Latin name, Ensemble Sonus Mundi.  These almost tuba-like noises are created from stroke rods steel cellos, (large sheets of metal that make spooky drones) are layered together with Tibetan style undertone chanting and overtone singing on the record, “Nequamquam Vacuum.”  An hourlong show involving space and silence would not be complete without a mention of John Cage, so we’ll hear one of his number pieces in arrangement for three overdubbed layers of percussion, a work from sound artists Mendi and Keith Obadike, and more.
