Mr. Hoffman

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

The Overseas Press Club presents Seymour N. Siegel moderating a panel of journalists who interview the Honorable Paul Hoffman, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme. The panel includes:

James Sheldon, columnist, _American Examiner_; treasurer, Overseas Press Club
Richard McGlocklen [?], editor, _New England Homestead_
Ted Stannard, United Press International Asia correspondent at the United Nations

Is America becoming more reluctant to foreign aid? Mr. Hoffman believes that Americans need to be better informed by those involved in foreign aid, and they will see that besides the moral reasons to which President Kennedy alluded, there are solid economic reasons to aid underdeveloped countries. The NDP is a lending institution, and foreign aid is dwarfed by armament spending. Which countries are most committed? Scandinavian countries, with Denmark highest per capita. How much does Japan give? "Not half enough," but there is a growing interest in foreign economic aid.
