Navigating New York City's transportation system with a disability

Many of us have heard the announcement on city subways telling riders that the train is coming into a wheelchair accessible station. But that doesn't always mean the elevator is working. And the MTA's goal to bring ramps and elevators to 95% of stations is still more than 30 years away. In the meantime, the city's transportation system continues to be a headache — and sometimes impossible to use — for many people with disabilities.
Sharon McLennon Wier is the Executive Director of the Center for Independence of the Disabled of New York. She joined WNYC Morning Edition host Michael Hill, to share what it's like to commute with a disability, and the changes that can be made to make the system easier to navigate.
