This Year, NJ Transit Really IS Having a 'Summer of Hell'

WNYC News | Aug 10, 2018

Last year, New Jersey Transit commuters braced for what officials warned would be a summer of train hell which ended up being tamer than expected. This summer, however, daily train cancellations and delays have left riders reeling.

"When you reduce the amount of mobility that you dole out to us who depend on your transit as if we were welfare recipients whose benefits you could reduce at will, you interfere with our lives," said transit advocate David Peter Alan at a New Jersey Transit board meeting Wednesday.

Transit officials have blamed many of these recent delays and cancellations on staff shortages and engineers calling out of work last minute. Meanwhile governor Phil Murphy has promised little relief.

Larry Higgs, transportation reporter for NJ Advance Media, unpacked the latest commuting woes with All Thing Considered host David Furst.
