New Royalty Debuts at the Central Park Zoo

The Central Park Zoo says the first king penguin chick ever hatched in the city is debuting at its Polar Circle exhibit.

The egg was hatched in August, while the parents were on display, but the family was quickly moved behind the scenes, to better monitor the chick's development.

King penguin parents keep their eggs warm by balancing them on their feet, with the two parents taking turns for the two month incubation period.

The bird—described by the zoo as a "gawky brownish fluff-ball"—and its parents will now join some 60 other penguins in the zoo's display.

The chick's sex has not yet been determined.
