New Sounds Live: Seth Parker Woods at The Greene Space

After his death in 1990, at the age of 49, Julius Eastman’s music seemed to disappear. Much of it was thought to be lost after Eastman had suffered a period of mental illness and homelessness. But in recent years, Eastman’s music has come roaring back. Cellist Seth Parker Woods is one of the musicians championing his works, and on Friday, Oct. 11 in The Greene Space, Seth Parker Woods plays a brand new arrangement of Julius Eastman’s “The Holy Presence of Joan d’Arc” for ten cellos. As he does on the newly released album from the collective Wild Up, Eastman: The Holy Presence, Woods performs the piece solo, playing live alongside nine recordings of himself.
Other compositions to be performed include Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s “Calvary Ostinato,” Monty Adkins’s “Winter Tendrils,” and Nathalie Joachim’s “Dam Mwen Yo” from his GRAMMY-nominated album Difficult Grace. Host John Schaefer will lead a conversation about this work, his upcoming New York Philharmonic debut, and his recent collaborations with composers Natalie Joachim, Tyshawn Sorey, Julia Adolphe, and Carlos Simon.
