New Year's Resolution: Returning to the Canvas

Studio 360 | Jan 15, 2014

What’s the creative project you’ve been meaning to get done?

When we put out the call in December, we heard from hundreds of people eager to throw their hat in the ring, and commit themselves to following through on their artistic plans.

Adrienne Ognibene says she had “a passionate love affair with soft vine charcoal” when she was an undergraduate. She studied art seriously, but shortly after graduation, she was in an accident that injured her hand. Now she’s busy practicing antitrust law up to 70 hours a week. “I doodle in my notes,” she tells Kurt Andersen.

Her resolution for 2014 is to complete six paintings and twelve large-scale charcoal drawings. It’s been several years since she made art regularly. “I’m worried that my skill level might have dropped from where I was,” she says. “But it’s also something that has been bothering me. It’s always nagging in the back of my head, that I don’t want to lose that ability either.”

Task #1: Pick up supplies
Task #2: Visit the National Gallery for inspiration
