It’s a tale of lust, betrayal, jealousy and murder. Today it would probably be an award-winning TV mini-series, but in 1900, Giacomo Puccini had to content himself with the opera house to tell the story of Tosca, a beautiful singer who loves the beleaguered painter Cavaradossi but who is herself  the object of the very unsavory affections of the police chief Scarpia. The question isn’t who will possess Tosca, but who, if anyone, will survive. The New York City Opera is performing Puccini’s opera Tosca on Aug. 24 at Bryant Park
