New York's Not as Transit Friendly as You Think

WNYC News | Oct 9, 2018

What do New York City's transit woes have to do with climate change?

After the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reported over the weekend that climate change might cause widespread foot shortages and other serious damage as soon as 2040, journalist Aaron Gordon took a look at that question. In an article for Curbed, Gordon writes that public transportation usage is falling while car services like Uber are on the rise, a shift that can be linked to poor bus and subway service. And while New Yorkers can push elected officials to take action by fixing transit and creating safe bike lanes, Gordon told WNYC's Jami Floyd in a later interview that local change begins on the individual level.

"Every single aspect of the way we evaluate our lives needs to be altered given this challenge we are presented with," he said. "We simply don't have time anymore to argue about parking, to argue about bike lanes."
