The Forgotten Documentary Capturing The Liberation of Nazi Concentration Camps

The Leonard Lopate Show | Jan 14, 2015

In 1945, Britain’s army film unit created a documentary about the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps, and it captured horrific footage from the liberation of Belsen, Dachau, Auschwitz and elsewhere. Sidney Bernstein, British film pioneer, masterminded the film, enlisting high profile collaborators including Alfred Hitchcock and Richard Crossman. But six months after the film had been green-lit, the British and American governments withdrew support for the film and it was consigned, incomplete, to the archives of the Imperial War Museum. The documentary “Night Will Fall" tell the story of this film. Producer Sally Angel will be on the show with Jane Wells, executive director of 3Generations and daughter of Sidney Bernstein. "Night will Fall" premieres Monday, January 26 at 9pm on HBO, and will be presented in conjunction with a global broadcast event to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27.
