Nona Hendryx Live, '22 July,' New York City Opera History

All Of It with Alison Stewart | Oct 9, 2018

Nona Hendryx, an American vocalist, record producer, songwriter, musician, author, and actor, joins us to discuss her upcoming performances. On October 20, Hendryx will perform at the Apollo Theater for Say It Loud: I'm Black And I'm Proud At 50! This performance celebrates James Brown and the 50th anniversary of his anthem. In addition, on October 27, Hendryx will perform "Refrigerated Dreams: A Work-In-Progress by Nona Hendryx, Niegel Smith, Carrie Mae Weems & Francesca Harper" at Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater. She is the inaugural recipient of The Vanguard Residency and Award and her work, Refrigerated Dreams, is an immersive multimedia installation and concert that transforms Joe’s Pub into a dinner party with a twist.

Director Paul Greengrass joins us to discuss his new film, "22 July." The film is a three-part story of Norway's worst terrorist attack in which over seventy people were killed. "22 July" looks at the disaster itself, the survivors, Norway's political system and the lawyers who worked on this horrific case.

Wall Street Journal opera critic, Heidi Waleson, joins us to discuss her new book, Mad Scenes and Exit Arias: The Death of the New York City Opera and the Future of Opera in America. Waleson explores the history of the New York City Opera, also known as “the People’s Opera,” which closed its doors in 2013. She recounts the history of this scrappy company and reveals how, from the beginning, it precariously balanced an ambitious artistic program on fragile financial supports. On October 10, Waleson will be in conversation with Zachary Woolfe, classical music editor of The New York Times, at Book Culture
