A Nuclear Family, An Avalanche, and a Bad Decision

Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund discusses his latest film, “Force Majeure,” about a family on a ski trip in the French Alps who are confronted with a near-avalanche. Their individual instincts when facing disaster become decisions that haunt them. The film is Sweden's 2015 submission for the Oscar for Best Foreign Film, and it was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film. Ruben Östlund’s first major retrospective, “In Case of No Emergency: The Films of Ruben Östlund,” is underway, a 15 city tour of the nation's top art house cinemas including New York's Film Society of Lincoln Center January 14-January 22.
