#3578: NY-based Indie Classical Music

New Sounds | Jun 23, 2015

Hear New York-based “indie classical” music on this New Sounds program. The main event for this show is “Thunder Lay Down in the Heart,” a work by violinist/composer/sound engineer Christopher Tignor, who also leads the bands Slow Six and Wires Under Tension, in addition to having done string arranging work with the epic post-rock ensemble, This Will Destroy You. Tignor’s latest record, "Thunder Lay Down in the Heart," features a collaboration with the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet John Ashbery, along with Rachel Grimes, (she of post-rock pioneers “Rachel’s), in addition to the stunning title track for string orchestra and electronics.

Also, composer/pianist Timo Andres quotes music from Brian Eno’s classic record “Another Green World” record in a work for the guitar-percussion San Francisco-bay area duo The Living Earth Show. Then, hear music from chamber group Bing and Ruth, in addition to a "song" from composer/songwriter Gabriel Kahane. Plus, a chamber work by Annie Clark, otherwise known as St. Vincent, for the chamber group yMusic. And more.
