Shootings by NYPD Officers Dropped Last Year

As the NYPD faces increased scrutiny over use of force stemming from the death of Eric Garner, a new report shows shootings by officers decreased 11 percent in 2013 compared to the year prior.

According the report, released by the NYPD, there were 40 incidents in which officers shot at suspects in 2013. That's down from an 11-year high of 61 in 2003.

Eight people were killed in police shootings in 2013, tied for the lowest number since the department began collecting shooting statistics and half the number who were shot in 2012. All eight suspects who were killed by police had prior arrests, and two were intoxicated at the time of the incidents, according to the report.

The report also says unintentional firearm discharges by police in 2013 decreased by 43 percent.

No officers were killed in confrontations with suspects in 2013.
