Officials Take Steps To Stop Coronavirus in ICE Detention

WNYC News | Mar 10, 2020

Steps are being taken to prevent the spread of coronavirus among Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees at the Hudson, Bergen and Essex county jails in New Jersey. Officials at the Hudson County jail say they won't house ICE detainees who were recently in China, Italy or Iran, and they're distributing sanitizing wipes to staff and those in custody. All three jails also suspended contact visits, so visitation is only through windows. Immigration lawyers are demanding that detainees have access to attorneys during any potential quarantine, citing reduced visits after a mumps outbreak at the Bergen jail last year.
