Operation Bowery

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

Operation Bowery, a program designed to help homeless men, is discussed by Morris Chase, the Director of the Bureau of Industrial Administration at the Department of Social Services and Joseph McCormick, the Acting Director of the Men's shelter at the Department of Social Services.

Operation Bowery began four years ago as an initiative to find out how the city can help homeless. The shelter feeds the men and gives them a place to sleep, especially those considered 'a homeless type,' which includes alcoholics with no family ties and illness.

Camp La Guardia in Chester, New York is located 60 miles from New York City and is a former girl's reforming house given by Mayor La Guardia to house the homeless. The facility treats men who wish to quit drinking alcohol and provides work opportunities for those that are strong enough. During the summer attendance is low since they work in hotels and resorts in New York state.
