Orquesta Akokán – "Con Licencia" (Soundcheck Podcast)

The band Orquesta Akokán is based mostly in Havana, although a couple of members are based here in New York. They keep alive the classic sounds of mid-century Cuban mambo, liberally spiced with later sounds like salsa and jazz. The name Akokán is a Yoruba word that means “from the heart,” and for lead singer Kiko Ruiz, this music also has a spiritual connection. So this band plays like they mean it, and the music may reach your heart, but it’ll probably reach your hips first. "Con Licencia" by Orquesta Akokán is one of the performances in our Best Of Soundcheck 2024 podcast.
