The band Orquesta Akokán is based mostly in Havana, although a couple of members are based here in New York. They keep alive the classic sounds of mid-century Cuban mambo, liberally spiced with later sounds like salsa and jazz. The name Akokán is a Yoruba word that means “from the heart,” and for lead singer Kiko Ruiz, this music also has a spiritual connection. So this band plays like they mean it, and the music may reach your heart, but it’ll probably reach your hips first.
