Our Top 10 'Top 10' Lists of 2017

WNYC News | Dec 22, 2017

One way to make sense of a dizzying year like 2017: Organize things into Top 10 lists. You've got the top movies, top albums, most read New Yorker articles (they went Top 25 for that one all important.

But there's more!

So, to recap the year that's left everyone needing a vacation, we present you a list of Top 10 lists, starting with:

1. Dr. Beach's '2017 Top 10 Beaches'

The first prize went to Sarasota, Florida's Siesta Beach, which has such fine sand, according to Dr. Beach, that it attracts sand collectors "from all over."

2. The Washington Post's 'The 10 Most Ridiculous Celebrity Apologies (That Have Nothing to Do With Harassment)'

The pop star Lorde, while supposedly describing her friendship with Taylor Swift, told The Guardian back in June, "It’s like having a friend with very specific allergies. There are certain places you can’t go together. Certain things you can’t do. There are these different sets of considerations within the friendship. It’s like having a friend with an autoimmune disease."

Lorde then tweeted, "didn't mention taylor, but regardless, i f***ed up & that was really insensitive. i'm sorry."

3. High Times' 'The Top 10 Strains of 2017'

Sour Girl. GMO Cookies. Grease Monkey. These are not racehorse names. They're types of weed.

4. Alabama.com's 'The Top 10 Democrats in Alabama for 2017'

No surprises here: Doug won.

5. Lloyd's List's 'Top 10 Women in Shipping in 2017'

"Twenty years ago," tweeted Lloyd's List's David Osler, "industry attitudes towards women were summed up by the existence of a website called 'Shipping Babes'. Thankfully, things have moved on."

We second that.

6. Formula 1's 'The Top 10 Celebrity Cameos of 2017'

Owen Wilson, star of the Disney movie Cars, did a pretty weird podium interview with British Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton. Check it out in the link above.

7. SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry's '2017 Top 10 New Species'

They discovered a spider that looks exactly like the sorting hat from Harry Potter, and named it "Eriovixia gryffindori"? Are you kidding me?! Awesome.

8. The Scientist's 'Top 10 Retractions of 2017'

Oh, Urology & Nephrology Open Access JournalThis is not good:

When John McCool received an email from the Urology & Nephrology Open Access Journal seeking submissions, given that he is neither a researcher nor a urologist, he did what any self-respecting Seinfeld fan would do: He submitted a bogus article dripping with Seinfeldian references.

Uromycitisis is not real.

9. Hypebeast.com's 'Top 10 Sneakers of 2017'

Some of the shoes on this list are honestly pretty ugly, but oh boy, look at these ones with a pigeon on them!

10.  CSP Daily News' '10 Food Retailing Forecasts for 2018'

Okay, we're cheating a bit with this one because it's a Top 10 list for 2018, which hasn't happened yet, but there are some solid predictions for the convenience store industry. According to self-described "supermarket guru" Phil Lempert, the hot new trend for 2018 will be "mindfulness":

Mindfulness reflects a new consumer attitude mostly led by millennials, to understand everything they can about a particular food or beverage, and then supporting the company, whether it be a brand or retailer, by aligning with their values, and supporting them with their purchases, he said.

And there you have it: Your Top 10 'Top 10' lists for 2017! Have a Happy New Year, and we'll see you in 2018, mindful and ready to rock.
