George Clinton did not invent funk. He just perfected it. And turned it into something cosmic, psychedelic, and theatrical. His groups Parliament and Funkadelic, eventually indistinguishable from each other and commonly referred to as P-Funk, landed on planet Earth in the 70s with an extravagant stage show and a series of groundbreaking albums whose influence can still be heard reverberating through hip hop, dance music, and neo-soul. The lineups have changed over the years, but the indefatigable Clinton is still there, leading the space-age funk band. Parliament Funkadelic plays May 22 at the Wellmont Theater in Montclair, NJ.
