The Chilean singer and musician Pascuala Ilabaca writes songs that are rooted in South American tradition, but which also question that tradition – especially when it comes to the place of women in society. She and her all-female band called Fauna have recently released this song, called “Por Que Se Fue La Paloma” – or why did the dove leave? Ilabaca’s song uses the imagery of a dove to suggest a woman’s right to leave the nest, and her right to return to it later. Pascuala Ilabaca and her band Fauna play on June 21 at the Sultan Room in Brooklyn.
