Patti Smith Remembers Her Friend, Sam Shepard

The Leonard Lopate Show | Dec 1, 2017

Singer/songwriter Patti Smith and the late Sam Shephard were longtime friends, who were so close that she helped him complete, edit and arrange the final manuscript of his last novella Spy of the First Person. It tells the story of an unnamed narrator who is becoming increasingly incapacitated by a condition, and looks back on his memories of work, adventure and travel as he undergoes medical procedures. Smith shares stories of her friendship with Shepard, and what it was like to work with him to finish the novella.

Patti Smith will appear for an event titled "Remembering Sam Shepard" on Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. at St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church (157 Montague St., Brooklyn). It will also feature Lenny Kaye and Tony Shanahan. The event is co-represented by PEN America and Knopf, with Books Are Magic.
