Jack Viertel worked as a Broadway producer for over 20 years and currently serves as the Artistic Director of the Encores! musical theater series. His book, The Secret Life of the American Musical: How Broadway Shows Are Built, takes readers backstage on Broadway. Inspired by his uncle’s classes on Shakespeare at Harvard, Viertel deconstructs famous American musicals, including "Gypsy" and "Fiddler on the Roof."
