The Indonesian singer and composer Peni Candra Rini keeps alive the tradition of female singers who perform with the traditional gamelans – the percussion orchestras of Java and Bali. But she also does more experimental things, like working with the Kronos Quartet. She makes her Carnegie Hall debut on Friday, Nov. 3, as part of the huge Kronos Quartet 50^th anniversary bash (that event is probably sold out by now), but Peni Candra Rini will be at Barbès in Brooklyn on Saturday night, Nov. 4, to do a trio set of new and traditional Indonesian songs.
