The Evolution of Black Leaders and Black Leadership in America

Historian Phyllis Leffler and activist and politician Julian Bond talk about the Civil Rights Movement and Black leadership in America. Julian Bond served from 1998 to 2010 as the chairman of the NAACP and was the co-director of the Explorations in Black Leadership project at UVA. He was also the first president of the Southern Poverty Law Center and served a combined twenty terms in both houses of the Georgia Legislature. Leffler collaborated with Bond for the Black Leaders on Leadership project, which uses the lives of prominent African Americans to trace the contours of Black leadership in America, and Leffler's new book is Black Leaders on Leadership: Conversations with Julian Bond.
