Political Punk in the GDR, A Play on Gloria Steinem

All Of It with Alison Stewart | Nov 9, 2018

Translator, music journalist, and former Berlin-based DJ, Tim Mohr, joins us to discuss his book, Burning Down the Haus: Punk Rock, Revolution, and the Fall of the Berlin Wall. This secret history of East German punk rock charts the genre's development from a musical and fashion style, to embodying the kind of freedom of expression that was denied in the GDR, and which ultimately lay the groundwork for the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Writer and activist Gloria Steinem has dedicated her life to championing the rights of women. Tony Award-nominated playwright Emily Mann, Tony Award-winning director Diane Paulus, and Academy, Golden Globe, and Emmy Award-winning actor and filmmaker Christine Lahti join us (at 17:05) to discuss creating the new play, “Gloria: A Life,” which celebrates Steinem’s life and work. It is currently playing at the Daryl Roth Theatre through March 31.

WNYC’s business and culture editor, Charlie Herman, joins us (at 43:00) or the next installment of our series, “Charlie For The Culture.”
