Pork Roll or Taylor Ham? New Jersey Minor League Team 'The Trenton Thunder' Takes Sides
Pork roll or Taylor ham?
It's a fierce debate that's polarized North and South Jersey residents for decades. Now one minor league baseball team is taking sides on what to call a processed meat product unique to the mid-Atlantic.
The Yankee-affiliated minor league team the Trenton Thunder announced they'll go by the name "The Thunder Pork Roll" one day a week.
The meat, perhaps best described for the uninitiated as a cross between Canadian bacon and bologna, is served on rolls across the Garden State. It's called "pork roll" in Southern Jersey, while folks from the north refer to the meaty snack as "Taylor ham."
Jeff Burley, the general manager of the Trenton Thunder, said the team will be playing up the pork on Fridays throughout the season starting May 18.
North Jersey residents are pushing back on social medial, saying they're on #TeamTaylorHam. But Burley said his decision won't waiver.
"We are in a pork roll area," he said. "I grew up in Central Jersey so I'm on #TeamPorkRoll."
Friday's game will feature pork roll uniforms and mascot. They'll be giving away free pork roll aprons and sell $1 pork roll sandwiches at concessions stands.
"We're having fun with it and I think that's what it's all about," he said. "Whatever you want to call it, it's definitely a delicious meal."
