The Power of a Super Boss

The Brian Lehrer Show | Feb 23, 2016

What’s the difference between a really great boss and a "Superboss?"

Sydney Finkelstein, professor of management at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, an executive coach, and the author of Superbosses: How Exceptional Leaders Master the Flow of Talent (Portfolio, 2016), says the secret to being a Superboss lies in making your employees accomplish more than they ever thought possible.

“If you study the top fifty leaders in any field as many as one-third will have worked for a Superboss,” Finkelstein says. While Superbosses differ in their personal styles, they all focus on identifying promising newcomers, inspiring their best work even if that means letting them go.

"No Donald Trump is not a Superboss," says Finkelstein, "There doesn't seem to be a lot of evidence that he helps other people get better."
