The President and the Press: A History

On the Media | Jan 20, 2017

Speaking at his inauguration, President Donald Trump described a country in ruins, plagued by poverty, crime and drugs. In order to rebuild, he declared, we must put “America first.” What might that mean? Based on last week's press conference and the ensuing threat to remove the press corps from the White House, it seems likely that it won't include friendly relations with the media.

But even if Trump were to move the press corps, would it really be that unprecedented? Time Magazine’s Olivia Waxman doesn’t think so. Using resources from the Time Archive, Waxman walks Brooke though the history of the long, often hostile, always evolving relationship between the president and the press.
