Private Press Recordings

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

These limited edition private-type presses range from the highly domestic audio-Christmas card to the more commercially-oriented recordings of musicians.

In this program, Canby features the following self-released, private press recordings:

- A 1967 Christmas greeting featuring Mr. Richard Field and daughter Anne. On the back of the record is a label on which is written in Field's own reproduced handwriting: "To explain: these tunes were composed by Richard S. Field Jr. and played one part at a time on tape. The process known as sound on sound recording was first made popular some years ago by Les Paul and Mary Ford. Instruments used here on this record are piano, recorder, wooden flute, drum, and wine glasses."

- An audio Christmas card from Tony Schwartz, featuring in part interviews with children about God, the differences between bad and good, heaven, and prayer.

- A recording of the Mendelssohn Glee Club, pressed but not recorded by Columbia Records.

- Music from the Zamir Chorale, sung entirely in Hebrew, on the Chessman record label in New York City.

- The Little German Band, from State College Pennsylvania, with the record "Octoberfest USA"
