This week Facebook handed over to congressional investigators 3,000 political ads believed to have been promoted by Russian propagandists. Meanwhile, CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg took to Facebook Live to tout the social media giant's new transparency measures, while COO Sheryl Sandberg announced revamped advertising policies.

All of these moves were in response, in part, to recent revelations regarding Facebook's lax ad moderation policies and the opaque nature of paid political messaging on the site. Julia Angwin is a senior reporter at ProPublica, where she's leading a crowdsourcing initiative that she hopes will empower the public to learn more about targeted advertising on Facebook.
