Young Public School Artists Light up Times Square

WNYC News | Jun 17, 2015

The Times Square Advertising Coalition unveiled on Wednesday a five-day public art presentation featuring artworks by public school students from the five boroughs. The works were selected from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's exhibition P.S. Art 2015, which is on display until Oct. 18.

"It is an honor to have works of art of such thoughtful and inventive New York City students hanging on the walls of the Met," said the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Sandra Jackson-Dumont, during a news conference attended by the young artists' family members and a gaggle of curious tourists. "We are delighted to have world-renowned Times Square as an additional showcase for them and their work."

Featured artists Sharon Yang and Kathy Flores addressed the audience as well. "Art is my favorite subject. It lets me see new things," said Yang. Family members and onlookers cheered as the first painting appeared on the American Eagle billboard.

Twenty-three student artworks will appear on two Times Square billboards once every hour through June 22.
