Yogi Berra's 1999 Interview with Brian Lehrer

The Brian Lehrer Show | Sep 23, 2015

We're remembering the great Yogi Berra today, who died at the age of 90 on Tuesday evening at his home in Montclair, New Jersey.

Brian Lehrer, a lifelong Yankees fan, has said that Yogi was one of his most memorable interviews of all time.

Listen above to hear the highlights of Yogi Berra's 1999 interview with Brian (back when the show was still called "On the Line"). Berra came on the show to promote a children's literacy event at Montclair Library, as part of his ongoing commitment to children and education. He also stuck around to take calls and questions from fans of all ages.

One of many "Yogi-isms" from his 1999 Brian Lehrer Show interview:

"I could be walking down the street, a lot of guys look at me and say, 'Gee you look like Yogi Berra!' And I say, 'A lot of people tell me that.'"

When a caller in Glen Rock, NJ asked, "How did you become such a good bad-ball hitter?"

"I just saw the ball good and I swung it and hit it. It looked good to me!"

When Brian said, "My son Nathan is 7 years old today, and he loves to play. Can you give him one piece of birthday baseball advice?"

"Play hard, and work at it. And it don’t matter who wins – you’re not playing for your life out there. You have fun, that’s the thing. I had a lot of fun, I really did. I enjoyed playing, I got to meet a lot of people in that game, in baseball. And especially if you’re a catcher, boy, you can talk to all the hitters. That’s a lot of fun!"
