Republicans are pushing to pass a tax bill by the end of the year. The version of the tax bill already passed by the House of Representatives includes a provision to repeal the 1954 Johnson Amendment, which prevents churches and nonprofit groups from endorsing and donating to political campaigns.

Just one month after taking office, President Donald Trump promised to "destroy" the Johnson Amendment. The Senate could vote on its version of the tax bill as early as this week.

Laurie Goodstein, national religion correspondent for our partner, The New York Times, joins The Takeaway to discuss the religious right's agenda, the proposed repeal and what the consequences could be if it is passed in the final version of the bill.

Ray Madoff, a law professor at Boston College and director of the Boston College Law School Forum on Philanthropy and the Public Good, discusses how provisions in both the House and Senate tax bills could hinder donations to charities and non-profits.
