CC Sabathia Heads to Rehab While Yankees Head to Playoffs

The Yankees are back in the post-season after a two-year absence. They take on the Houston Astros Tuesday in the American League Wild Card playoff.  But they will be without starting pitcher CC Sabathia who announced yesterday he is checking into alcohol rehab.

Since joining the Yankees in 2009 Sabathia has been a centerpiece of the team's pitching staff. He's struggled this season though, putting up a disappointing 6-10 record.

"He did not need to come out and specify why he was leaving the team," said Joel Sherman, sports columnist for the New York Post. "Anyone that follow the team knows that he's had very serious knee injuries that has led to the downfall of his career. The fact that he made public that he has an alcohol problem and he need help is kind of an interesting facet in all of this."

Sherman spoke with WNYC's Soterios Johnson.
