Sanda Weigl was born in Rumania, but she gained notoriety as the lead singer of a rock band in the old East Germany, and eventually made her way to the West after two years of forced labor in East Berlin. She’s made her reputation here in the States doing inventive versions of traditional Romanian and gypsy songs, and the songs of American iconoclast Tom Waits. It all ends up sounding like something you’d hear at a post-apocalyptic cabaret. Sanda Weigl performs two sets on Thurs., May 20, at the club Barbès in Brooklyn for a very limited live audience. It’ll be streaming for the rest of us.
