Settlement in Segregation Suit Against NJ School District

WNYC News | Jul 21, 2020

The South Orange-Maplewood School District has settled a 2018 lawsuit accusing it of racial segregation. The board unanimously agreed to the settlement, and the district will now initiate several integration efforts, overseen by a monitor.

The twin commuter towns, located less than 20 miles from Midtown Manhattan, are known for their diversity and progressive politics. But a group calling itself the Black Parents Workshop accused the district of systemic racism.

Robert Tarver is the attorney who filed the suit on behalf of the parents group. He spoke with WNYC's David Furst.
