Silicon Valley's 2019, A New Jazz Opera, 'Charlie for the Culture'

All Of It with Alison Stewart | Jan 4, 2019

Kara Swisher, co-founder and editor-at-large of Recode, host of the Recode Decode podcast, and a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times, joins us with an update on the latest news coming out of Silicon Valley.

Ted Rosenthal (19:50) and the New York City Opera general director, Michael Capasso, join us to discuss the world premiere of a new jazz opera titled, "Dear Erich." The production is inspired by over 200 wartime letters written between 1938 and 1941 from Herta Rosenthal to her son Erich who escaped to Chicago from Nazi Germany, while his family had to stay behind. Erich’s son is Ted Rosenthal, one of the leading jazz pianists of our generation. Ted and his wife Lesley wrote and co-composed "Dear Erich," which will have its world premiere on January 9 at the Museum of Jewish Heritage and will run through January 13. The production is co-produced by the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene and the New York City Opera

WNYC’s business and culture editor, Charlie Herman, (40:50) joins us for this week’s installment of “Charlie for the Culture.”
